Title:Blast response of structures

Presenter:Dr. Ye Yuan

Time:10am-11:30am, August 19nd, 2016

Place:Conference Room 501, School of Transportation Science and Engineering, Beihang University

Abstract:

This study investigates the blast response of simple structural components underwater and in air. Experimental work by others have shown that, with increasing loading intensity, these components deform in one of either three modes: mode I (large inelastic deformation), mode II (tensile tearing) or mode III (transverse shear failure). The aim of this work is to develop theoretical and numerical models that can accurately predict these damage modes, taking into account the effects of fluid-structure interactions, for both impulsive and non-impulsive blast loadings.

Short Biography:

Dr. Yuan received his PhD in Department of Mechanical Engineering from University College London in 2015. He then joined Department of Automotive Engineering at Tsinghua University as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. Dr. Yuan pursues research to understand how light-weight materials (foams, composites, etc.) and structures (sandwich panels, laminated structures, etc.) respond to unconventional loadings (blast loading, ballistic loading, impact loading, etc.) and how they may be designed, or used in combination, to withstand more arduous operating conditions.
