ABTRACT:Over more than half a century, traffic flow theory has evolved from simple to complex and from macroscopic to microscopic, and the trend is still continuing. A field theory was recently proposed that applies physical laws and social rules to traffic flow modeling. As such, traffic flow theory founds its root in science that permits rigorous exploration. Meanwhile, using the field theory as a framework, traffic flow models at various levels are connected and a unified perspective can be casted on traffic flow theory.

Speaker BioDaiheng Ni is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Dr. Ni’s research focuses on Air Traffic Modeling and Control, Traffic Flow Theory and Simulation, Connected Vehicle Technology, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2005, Dr. Ni worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology, GA for eight months. Dr. Ni served as a member of the prestigious Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee on Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics (AHB45) from 2008 to 2013. He is also a member of the TRB Joint Simulation Subcommittee (AHB45(1)). Dr. Ni received his Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, GA in 2004 and 2001 respectively. He also received his M.S. in Industrial Engineering (ISYE) from Georgia Institute of Technology, GA in 2003. He received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in Beijing Agricultural Engineering University of China in 1994 and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Jilin University of Technology of China in 1991.
